About my work

When I was a teenager deciding what to do with my life, I knew I wanted two things from my job: something more meaningful than a paycheque and a few part-time jobs instead of a full-time one. Now I work as a freelance interpreter, writer, fitness/yoga teacher, and occasional translator and English tutor.

I carefully craft accessible communication that is clear, coherent, and concise and that is tailored to the audience, purpose, and genre of the message.

I am also proprietor of an independent business, Dancipation Wellness.

Interpreting
I studied American Sign Language (ASL) and Deaf Culture Studies in Vancouver, BC and ASL-English interpretation in Edmonton, AB. I have 30 years’ experience interpreting throughout Canada and the US in the fields of post-secondary, the arts, and business.

My international experience includes studying New Zealand Sign Language (NZSL) at Auckland University of Technology, New Zealand and being a guest speaker at Victoria University, Wellington, New Zealand.

I also do translations of ASL into English text.

Writing
I achieved the Creative Writing Certificate from the University of Calgary. I have also taken writing workshops in creative nonfiction at the University of Toronto and through the Writers’ Studio at Simon Fraser University. I write short fiction, creative nonfiction, travel/food/wellness blogs, and reviews. I have contributed to various newsletters.

I am currently working towards the Editing and Plain Language Certificates from Simon Fraser University, Vancouver, BC.

Teaching
I am a native English speaker who is CELTA (Certificate in English Language Teaching to Adults) trained. CELTA is an internationally recognized certification from Cambridge University, Cambridge, UK.

I teach fitness, barre, and yoga classes.

Collaborating
I like my work and I can’t afford to retire, so I am always on the lookout for mutually beneficial work opportunities. Can we work together?
